Harmonics Analysis Studies

FAQ

What are harmonics in electrical systems?

Harmonics are voltage and current waveform distortions caused by non-linear electrical loads — equipment that draws current in a non-sinusoidal pattern. Common sources of harmonics include variable frequency drives (VFDs), switching power supplies, LED lighting, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and other power electronic devices. Harmonics distort the clean sinusoidal waveform of the power supply, which can cause a range of problems throughout the electrical system.

Harmonic distortion can cause overheating of transformers, cables, and motors, nuisance tripping of protective devices, premature equipment failure, increased energy losses, interference with sensitive electronic equipment, and damage to power factor correction capacitors. In facilities with a high concentration of variable frequency drives or other non-linear loads, harmonic levels can become severe enough to cause significant operational disruptions.

A harmonics analysis study is an engineering assessment that measures and evaluates the harmonic content in your electrical system. Sabino Electric’s engineers use sophisticated simulation software to model your system’s harmonic performance, identify the sources and magnitude of harmonic distortion, assess compliance with applicable standards, and develop recommendations for mitigation.

Sabino Electric verifies harmonic analysis results against IEEE 519 — the recognized industry standard for harmonic control in electrical power systems. IEEE 519 sets limits for harmonic voltage and current distortion at the point of common coupling between the utility and the customer, and Sabino Electric’s studies assess compliance with these limits.

Yes. Sabino Electric provides end-to-end harmonic services — from the initial analysis and measurement through to designing and implementing appropriate mitigation measures. Solutions may include passive harmonic filters, active harmonic filters, line reactors, isolation transformers, or system reconfiguration depending on the nature and severity of the harmonic issues identified.

Common indicators of harmonic problems include unexplained overheating of transformers or neutral conductors, nuisance tripping of breakers or fuses, premature failure of capacitor banks, interference with communications equipment, and increased energy costs. If your facility has a high proportion of variable frequency drives, switching power supplies, or other non-linear loads, a harmonics analysis study is recommended as a proactive measure.

Sabino Electric provides harmonics analysis study services throughout Arizona, and through the BCES Global network of subsidiary companies, across the rest of North America.
